Lakshadweep is a small palm covered cluster of islands in the Arabian Sea. It has beautiful and almost untouched beaches. The lovely white coral beaches of Lakshadweep with turquoise waters are unmatched in the world. Being an almost isolated place one can relax to the hearts content. The marine life and the coral reefs are simply stunning.

Foreign tourists can visit only Bangaram, Agatti and Kadmat for which special permits are required, whereas Indian tourists can make day trips to Kalpeni, Minicoy and Kavaratti too.

 
Bangaram Island : Bangaram Island fringed with pure sand and sight of the moon slipping beneath the lagoon horizon is worth the experience. The adventure seekers chill out with water sports activities like diving, snorkeling, sailing and deep-sea fishing. You can find all sorts of accommodation here according to your Budget. Agatti Island also have some beautiful beaches where snorkeling and diving can be arranged. You can hire a boat to visit nearby islands.

The islands’ pristine waters, unspoilt coral reefs and moderate temperature make it a diver’s dream. The best time for diving is from October to May. During the monsoon, diving is still possible in the lagoons or outside the reefs but the weather can really turn rough.

There are daily flights to Agatti Island from Kochi. You can carry only up to 10 kg luggage. From Agatti it is one and half hours boat journey to Bangaram. If you are comfortable with sailing then you can go via boat from Kochi to Kadmat Island.

 
Orissa Beaches
 

Orissa is famous for its beaches in Puri and for Gopalpur on sea. Puri is a tourist destination and is specially crowded at the time of the Jagannath Temple Rath Yatra. The Puri Rath Yatra is an annual function that attracts people from all over the world. Puri beach is very popular among the tourists that throng puri. It is also a popular domestic destination all through the year.

There are some other beautiful beaches which are most sought after by the tourists. Konark beach located three km from famous Konark Sun temple is a beautiful beach which is much quieter and cleaner. You can take bus or taxi from Puri to Konark which usually takes one hour.

Gopalpur-on-sea is a must see beach with its soft sand and blue waters. It is peaceful and much quieter than the Puri beach where you can spend some quality time. The best time to visit is from November to January. Most of the hotels and restaurants offer local cuisine and discounts in the off season. An excursion to hot springs at Taptapani (45km) is must for every itinerary. It is well connected from Behrampur (18 km) and Bhubneshwar by road and railways.

Beaches in Tamil Nadu
 

Tamil Nadu the ‘cradle of Dravidian culture’ has fabulous beaches along its long coastline with delightful fishing villages, resorts and water sports facilities.Some of these like Marina and Elliot beaches are situated in Chennai the capital of Tamil Nadu.

Covelong Beach : Covelong Beach is a small beach located between Chennai and Mahabalipuram. Covelong port was originally built by Saadat Ali Nawab of Carnatic which was later taken by the British.

Covelong's clean sandy beach offers water sport facilities and is a popular picnic spot. You can also see an Ancient Fort, a Catholic Church and a Mosque which are other tourist attractions.

Covelong is 60 km from Chennai. You can hire a taxi from Chennai which will take at least one hour to reach the beach.

Elliots Beach : A preferred destination for many tourists, Elliots Beach is situated at Besant Nagar, Chennai. It is much cleaner and less crowded than the Marina Beach. Being adjacent to the main city it has a host of evening and morning joggers as well as families on the beach. If you prefer lesser crowds than it is best to visit the beach during the day, but then at this time you will miss the cool morning and evening breeze.

This beach is not recommended for sunbathers. Near by private beaches like VGP Golden Beach and MGM Beach offer privacy for sunbathers. Here on the Elliots Beach, you can find all types of fast food eating joints and small shops lining the beach. You can also visit Velanganni Church and Ashtalakshmi temple located in close vicinity.

Chennai is well-connected by air, rail and road transport systems. The best time to visit is from December to February.

Kanyakumari Beach : Kanyakumari is a unique beach that is surrounded by three seas; the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. It is located at the southernmost tip of India. Kanyakumari coast is famous for its fabulous sun set and sun rise views especially on full moon days from the shore. The Kanyakumari coast has some very small golden sand beaches but they are rocky.

Kanyakumari is a pilgrimage destination. It is also popular as it lies in the southern most part of the Indian Penninsula. This is where the Sangam lies, which is the meeting point of the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Vivekananda’s rock is the prime tourist attraction where it is believed that Swami Vivekananda meditated. For protection from high waves there is wall constructed along the sea. However you can get panoramic view from the light house.

Kanyakumari is connected with Thiruvanathapuram through air and rail links.

Mahabalipuram : Mahabalipuram beach in TamilNadu is one of the favoured beach destinations in India. In Mahabalipuram one does not only find a great beach but also a cultural heritage that one can't stop wowing. Centuries old monuments built of sandy rocks stand proud against the waves on the beaches of Mahabalipuram and amazing rock cut art is displayed.The shore temples, Rathas and Arjuna’s Penance enchant the traveller to the Mahabalipuram beach.

Even though the climate is more or less warm all through teh year, the best time to visit Mahabalipuram is from November to February when it is cooler. Performances of traditional Indian dances and classical music at the Dance Festival is organized by the Dept. of Tourism Govt of Tamil Nadu.

A crocodile farm and snake venom-extracting centre besides the school of art and sculpture are other tourist attractions nearby.

Marina Beach : Marina Beach is the longest beach of India with golden sand and shimmering blue waters. It stretches up to 12 km on the eastern side of Chennai. Watch a fascinating sunset. Marina Beach is a picnic spot and a family beach and not suitable for sunbathers. Yes, if you want to play beach ball or take a swim, you are welcome.

Come evenings you can find virtually all kinds of entertainment with stalls selling southern delights. It is also an important venue for state functions. There are some beautiful and well laid out gardens near the beach.

If you drive along the main beach road then you can see some of the important landmarks like University of Madras, Senate-House, Chepauk Palace and Presidency College. You can also visit the samadhis or the memorials of former chief ministers Anna and MGR situated on the Marina beach.

Rameshwaram Beach : It is a holy city of Tamil Nadu with many temples and religious places. Rameshwaram‘s serene beach with shallow waters is very popular both among the tourists and pilgrims who come for holy dips from all corners of the country.

Since Rameshwaram is very famous for its temple and pujas, very rarely do people come here to see its beaches alone. But once people come here, they try to visit the beaches, as many times it is part of the religious ritual.

Rameshwaram does have some other beaches very hidden away from the public eye, but these beaches have not been developed or encouraged as tourist spots.
